The initial difficulties of journalism online

Difficult was the initial way in Internet journalism and its affirmation. Early in the efforts were mainly made by some fans of science and the few supporters we had to clash with widespread skepticism. The difficulties encountered by journalists on the web can be traced to five factors:

1. Cultural backwardness, especially in the editors themselves, among the journalists where older new technologies and their potential were little known. Was strong resistance they opposed to the use of new ways to do journalism.
2. Economic difficulties. Create a website in which information required to make a substantial economic investment returns and often seemed decidedly uncertain. From experiments on the web occurring in other countries had been able to see how difficult it was able to earn even the minimum, and so from the web, including the poor dissemination of the network in Italy, the editors had doubts before this news.
3. Fears of "cannibalization." They were not few those who believed that the online version of the newspaper, especially since free, could be seen by readers as an alternative to the paper thereby decreasing sales.
4th Little understanding of journalism on the Internet for many journalists the information on the web was an "division" should be reserved for any young person with the passion of your computer. A vision is likely due to the conviction of the volatility of the journalism and the low prestige that it had considered this information of low quality and reliability, because they inserted in a context where everyone has the opportunity to publish and where they have marked the boundaries between and not official publication.
5. Technology limits up to the first half of the nineties, the network had limits beyond question. Low-level technologies were also very expensive: in 1995 to connect to the Internet should spend a base of around 200,000 pounds a year subscription to one provider, which was necessary to add the cost of telephone calls. Slow connections, but at high prices that, after interminable waits, allowing access to pages with just text and graphics almost non-existent, not making sure the information on the web compete with newspapers, radio and TV.

Fortunately after a few years after the first publication of newspapers on line, there was the turning point.
